How to Prepare for the 24 Hours of Appalachia: A Comprehensive Guide
Participating in the 24 Hours of Appalachia is an exhilarating experience for adventure seekers. Whether you’re entering with a full size vehicle, side-by-side/UTV, or on a dualsport/adventure bike, preparation is crucial for success and safety. Here’s how to get ready for this challenging event:
General Requirements for All Participants:
1. Documentation & Legalities:
– Ensure your vehicle or motorcycle is fully licensed and insured.
– Possess a valid driver/operator’s license.
2. Vehicle Requirements:
– Your vehicle must be a 4WD/AWD with a minimum tire size of 31 inches (maximum is limitless).
– Equipped with functioning seat belts, safety restraints, and self-recovery tools such as a winch, traction boards, hi-lift jack, or come along.
3. Safety & Navigation:
– Carry a first aid kit.
-FULL SIZE AND SXS Vehicles MUST HAVE AT LEAST ONE FIRE EXTINGUSHIER ON BOARD
-FULL SIZE AND SXS Vehicles MUST HAVE A CHASE LIGHT mounted to the rear of the vehicle that is visible
– Utilize navigational tools like Gaia GPS, OnX, or Garmin, capable of opening and tracking .gpx files.
– Include adequate lighting and an air compressor in your gear.
– Keep a tire repair kit on hand, along with a GMRS Radio and cell phone.
– Secure all gear to prevent loose, flying objects in the vehicle.
– A chainsaw is highly recommended but not a necessity.
– Adhere to all WV, KY, and OH Traffic and Road Safety laws.
For Vehicles and SXS’s:
1. Co-Driver/Navigator:
– Having a co-driver is mandatory, though a third person for spotting/recovery is advisable if space permits.
Dualsport/Adventure Bike Requirements:
1. Bike Preparation:
– Your bike should have an engine size between 200cc to 1290cc.
– Equipped with full knobbies on both front and rear tires
-GPS/phone navigation mounts.
– Attached full wrap-around handguards.
– Ensure your bike is fully insured, street legal, and includes a USFS-approved spark arrestor with exhaust noise under 98 decibels.
– Carry spare tubes or a plug kit.
2. Rider Gear:
– Wear a DOT-approved helmet, goggles, or safety glasses.
– Choose a full-length shirt/jersey and pants.
– Don gloves and full-length boots for protection.
Preparation Tips:
1. Navigation Practice:
– Familiarize yourself with your GPS or navigation app to ensure accuracy and ease during the event.
– Rehearse loading and following .gpx files on your device.
2. Safety and Self-Recovery:
– Practice using recovery tools on various terrains to become adept at self-rescue.
– Regularly check equipment for functionality and reliability.
3. Communication:
– Practice using your GMRS radio to ensure clear and effective communication with your team.
4. Hydration and Diet
-Drink plenty of water before and during the event, do not over do it on energy drinks as they can cause fatigue faster
-Make sure to eat clean several days leading up to the event so that you are not faced with issues of having to stop a bunch to do “your business”….
